This query contains the following measures: crude rates for cancers over five year intervals, three year intervals, and single year intervals. - Important: This data provides public health researchers, professionals and the general public with summary information about the rates and patterns of various cancers in the state of Utah from the Utah Cancer Registry. Data are not available for public use.

- Derivation:
- Numerator: Numerator is composed of counts of unique incident cancer cases during a specified calendar year within residents of a specified geographic region.
- Denominator: Denominator is composed of the population at risk for developing the selected cancer within a specific region.
- Rates: Rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. standard population.
- MeasureUse: These data can be used to understand the distribution of the incidence of various cancers. Cancer case data provide a means to identify unusual changes and differences in the patterns of occurrence of specific forms of cancer in population subgroups defined by temporal, geographic, demographic, and social characteristics.
- MeasureLimitations: Counts and rates will be calculated based upon residential address at time of diagnosis. No information is available on prior residences.
Geocoding accuracy, level of geocoding, and geocoding completeness may vary by time and space. This could potentially create geographically non-random errors in calculated rates of cancer.
No personal exposure information will be available, including smoking history, diet, lifestyle, or history of cancer.
Data that will reveal the identity of any individual diagnosed with cancer can not be released. Suppression rules will govern the release of small case counts.
No information will be available on the latency of cancer cases.

- Purpose: One of the major functions of Utah Cancer Registry is to serve as a resource for researchers, physicians, hospitals, and the Utah Department of health. The Utah Cancer Registry also provides local data to national agencies for the purpose of generating national cancer statistics. Other functions include serving as an educational and data resource for physicians and institutions, to stimulate research into all aspects of cancer in Utah, and to promote state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and treatment.
- Use: These data can be used to understand the distribution of the incidence of various cancers. Cancer case data provide a means to identify unusual changes and differences in the patterns of occurrence of specific forms of cancer in population subgroups defined by temporal, geographic, demographic, and social characteristics.
- DataSources: Cases and cancer data are provided to the Utah Cancer Registry by hospitals, physicians, pathology laboratories, radiation centers, nursing homes, the Department of Vital Statistics, and other state registries.
- DataLimitations: The Utah Cancer Registry is not a closed database meaning that number can be updated for any year. When we add new years of data to the IBIS Query System the number for previous years may change to reflect these updates. Cancer cases reflect a single incident report of a primary diagnosis of cancer and, therefore, do not include prevalent or recurrent cancers.
Slight variations in case counts and rates may have also appeared since the adoption of the International Classification of Disease for Oncology, 3rd Edition (ICD-O-3), primary site and histology codes. The 3rd classification was updated with a number of new or modified codes and terms (ICD-O-3.1) and was published in 2013. - Standards: Data quality assurance encompasses the personnel and activities that focus on the assessment and improvement of data quality. Every feature of the central registry’s operations, including the laws and regulations under which the registry operates, impacts data quality. Examples include: relationships with hospitals, outpatient facilities, and physicians in the registry’s coverage area; data collection system design and capabilities; qualifications and training of central registry staff; review of data for analysis and reporting. Health care practitioners are legally required to report cancer to the Utah State Health Department in the state of Utah. The Utah State Health Department has given authority to the Utah Cancer Registry to collect information on all people diagnosed with cancer in Utah, under the Cancer Reporting Rule, R384-100.
Because the Utah Cancer Registry falls under the definition of a public health entity, the Cancer Reporting Rule takes precedence over the recent legislation called HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
