- abstract:
This dataset contains annual case counts for inpatient hospitalized myocardial infarction ( ICD-9-CM: 410.XX or ICD-10-CM:I21-I22) as the primary diagnosis occurring among Utah residents. This data has been aggregated by county, year and month of admission, five-year age groups, race, ethnicity, and sex. The myocardial infarction data was obtained from the Utah Hospitalization Discharge Database. The Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network receives the data through the Office of Health Care Statistics of the Utah Department of Health. The data was aggregated by the Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network.
- Important:
This data provides summary information about the rates and patterns of heart attack hospitalizations and emergency department visits in the state of Utah. This data is available for public use.
- Measures:
- Derivation:
- Hospitalizations:
- Numerator: This indicator contains the following variables: 1. Number of hospitalizations for a primary diagnosis of heart attack 2. Rate of hospitalization among persons 35 and over by age group 3. Age-adjusted rate of hospitalization for persons 35 and over.
- Denominator: When applicable, population was obtained from the IBIS query for appropriate years by 5-year age groups for persons 35 and above
- Rates: Per 10,000 population.
- Number: Hospitalizations due to heart attack
- EDVisit:
- Numerator: Persons who have been admitted to the emergency department for a myocardial infarction
- Denominator: Utah population
- Rates: Per 10,000 population
- Number: Emergency department visits due to heart attack
- MeasureUse
- Unit: Heart attacks were defined with a primary diagnosis of 410-410.92 according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9) codes or I21-I22 of the ICD-10-CM codes.

- Purpose:
This dataset was developed for the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network. The organization of this data is consistent with the guidance for creating asthma and myocardial infarction inpatient hospitalization Nationally Consistent Data and Measures (NCDMs).
- Use: These data can be used to understand the distribution and patterns of hospitalizations and emergency department visits due to heart attacks.
- DataSources: Heart attack hospitalization and emergency department visit data is reported to the Office of Health Care Statistics (OHCS). Emergency department data is obtained from the Emergency Department Encounter Database, which is maintained by the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) in the Utah Department of Health.
- DataLimitations: Hospitalization data for heart attacks do not include individuals who do not receive medical care or who are not hospitalized. This includes those who die in emergency rooms, in nursing homes, or at home, and those treated in outpatient settings. Also, the measures are based upon events, not individuals. Therefore, if an individual is admitted multiple times, each admission will be counted separately. This could overestimate the true prevalence of heart attacks.

- ReportingProtocols:
- supplinf:
The Utah Hospitalization Discharge Database (UHDD) provides information about the primary and contributing diagnoses of individuals hospitalized in Utah. For this dataset, only the primary diagnosis was used. Cases of secondary or contributing asthma or myocardial infarction have been excluded. The Office of Health Care Statistics (OHCS) serves as the official repository for UHDD data per the Utah Code Annotated Chapter 33a, Title 26, Utah Administrative Rules R428-10 and R428-11, and a Memorandum of Agreement between the Utah Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (UEPHTN) and the OHCS. The OHCS collects complete, timely, and accurate emergency department case information and disposition data for all hospitalizations occurring in Utah. Before providing annual data updates to the UEPHTN, the OHCS validates the data quality according to the standards published in the UHDD Public-Use Data File User's Manual. Information about this dataset can be found at http://stats.health.utah.gov/publications/. The UEPHTN then processes the data according to OHCS aggregation and use requirements before publishing the new dataset.

- Constraints:
- Access: Public Health Professionals may only access Utah Tracking Network data through Secure IBIS-PH or in any other way after submitting a complete application as contained in the document Third Party Application for Access to Secure IBIS-PH for Public Health Professionals. Similarly, researchers must submit a complete application as contained in the document Third Party Application for Access to Secure IBIS-PH for Research Projects. The Scientific Review Board (SRB) does not serve as an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Applications requiring an IRB must submit for IRB approval separately. The applications can be submitted concurrently, but the SRB will not grant data access until they have received proof that the IRB has approved the research project. The SRB may conditionally approve access to Secure IBIS-PH pending IRB approval. The SRB ensures that the research proposal meets all of the data owner(s)’s requirements.Visit http://epht.health.utah.gov/epht-view/dataportal/SecureDatasetIntroduction.html for more information.
