Query Builder for Mortality ICD-10 Query Module for Utah Small Areas - Crude Rates, Deaths Per 100,000 Population

Overview

The mortality data in this IBIS-Q query module have been derived from death certificates in participation with the National Vital Statistics System, and are maintained and provided by the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Vital Records. They include virtually all deaths of Utah residents, regardless of where the death occurred. The causes of death were coded using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. The population data used for the denominator were produced by ESRI ZIP Code data provided annual population estimates for ZIP Code areas by sex and age groups, are considered the most accurate available.

As of November 22, 2017, the IBIS system has been updated to use an algorithm which uses both ZIP and county information to designate Local Health District (LHD) and Utah Small Area. Follow the steps to narrow your query and display your results. When you are done forming your query, click "Submit" at the bottom of the screen (last step) to get your query result.

  • What year grouping do you want to select? Default is single years, most recent year.

  • Selecting years

    Select a range of years. Use Ctrl to make multiple selections.

    The year groupings you select here will be used to display your results if you choose "year" below in the display the results step. For instance, if you choose "Single years" here, and choose "Year/Year Groups" in the display the results step, your query results will be displayed for single years, for the range of years you selected. If you select "3-year groups", "5-year groups" or if you enter custom year groups, your query results will be aggregated within those year groups.





  • Cause of Death

    There are a variety of predefined causes of death to choose from. If causes on the predefined lists do not meet your needs, you may enter your own ICD codes by selecting, (User-defined causes.)
    Default is all NCHS 50 leading causes. Use the help link as an instruction to get top leading causes of death

  • How to Specify ICD Codes

    Enter the codes, use a hyphen to indicate a range of codes, use a space or comma between codes.

    For ICD-10 codes: P23 includes all codes under P23 (congenital pneumonia), from P23.0 (Congenital pneumonia due to viral agent) to P23.9 (Congenital pneumonia, unspecified). Because the codes are alpha-numeric and not simply numeric, deaths coded simply (P23) will not be included in a range from P23.0-P23.9. P23-P24 would include all codes under P23 and P24.

    For ICD-9 codes: 480 includes all codes under 480 (viral pneumonia), from 480.0 (Pneumonia due to adenovirus) to 480.9 (Viral pneumonia, unspecified). Deaths coded simply 480 will not be included in a range from 480.0-480.9. 480-481 would include all codes under 480 and 481.

    For ICD-9 Injury codes: Codes 800 and higher are injury codes. They are referred to as E-codes. To specify E-codes type in the numbers WITHOUT the E. For example: Adverse Effects of Medical Procedures and Care are codes E870-E879. When entering these codes type 870-879.











  • First choose a coding scheme to use for age groups. Default is age adjustment age groups, all ages.





















  • Would you like to include only males or only females in the results? Default includes both sexes.

  • Default is all Utah Small Areas

    • To get the HII map please select "ADI" on "Map" on last step "How to display the data" step.

To display a map, you must select Geographic Area in Display By (category) and None in Group By (series)

Primary group by field

Defines the data's primary grouping dimension. The primary grouping is required and also controls the ordering of the result's data rows. In MS-Excel and other graphing packages this is typically referred to as the the "dataset's category". If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this value/dimension is associated with table's "row" values. Others will refer to this value as the first "cross by" or the first dimension.

Optional secondary group by field

Defines the 2nd field (or dimension) to be used to group and aggregate values by. MS-Excel chart users will commonly refer to this as the dataset's "series" field. If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this field is associated with data table's value columns. Series group bys are optional. Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified.

Defines the optional chart graphic to display.

NOTE: Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified. All other charts will only work with a maximum of 2 group bys e.g. if the fixed group by exists then the series group by can NOT be used with charting or maps.

Optional map graph

Defines the optional map graphic to display.

NOTE: Maps are only available when the category is set to a geographical area and does not have a series defined.
