      • Important: This indicator can be used to identify the proximity of residential neighborhoods to parks and public elementary schools. It should be understood in the context of public health challenges of physical activity and obesity. This indicator can help policy makers, planning departments, and school districts better understand the impact of access to parks and schools upon public health and inform decisions when siting parks or schools. These data can be used to integrate park and school-siting into broader community planning processes, such as short- and long-range comprehensive plans, to ensure that healthy destinations can be more accessible, allowing access via walking and bicycling.

      • DataLimitations: School data: This measure is dependent upon the estimates of a small subgroup of the population. The error associated with the estimates of children 5-9 made the calculation of this measure inappropriate. This measure will be updated after the 2020 decennial census. Park data: Navteq and Esri StreetMap Premium HERE parks data represent a wide spectrum of infrastructure that encourages physical activity but it is not possible to determine the completeness of data coverage. The commercial data source has changed since 2010. Additionally, the data source may contain inherent errors in park locations and/or omissions. Population data: The US Census is updated only every 10 years, so 5-9 year old children in 2010 will be out of the age range in 2015.

        • supplinf: Having access, via walking or bicycling, to health-promoting destinations, such as parks and schools, is important for overall health. Using parks and recreation services has been shown to have positive health impacts, including the physical, social, and mental aspects of health.1 Walking or bicycling to school provides an opportunity for children (and parents accompanying them) to regularly engage in physical activity, and is a strategy designed to combat childhood obesity.2 Being physically active is associated with a number of physical health benefits including improved cardiovascular health; weight loss or maintenance; decreased risk of becoming obese, or developing type II diabetes, high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, osteoporosis, and other chronic diseases; and positive psychological health benefits (i.e., reduced stress levels and depression).

The Scientific Review Board (SRB) does not serve as an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Applications requiring an IRB must submit for IRB approval separately.
