Data Interpretation Issues

Incidence rates may vary from source to source. This may be because of having more or less updated information or using different population databases. Cancer diagnoses in 2020 may be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic due to the changes in health services and cancer screening accessibility.

Why Is This Important?

The most common type of bladder cancer is urothelial carcinoma. Bladder cancer incidence reported here includes both in situ and invasive cancers. The CDC includes in situ cancers in reports of national cancer statistics because it can often be difficult to distinguish between in situ and invasive bladder cancers[1]. Bladder cancer can develop in people of any age, but the risk of developing bladder cancer increases with age. It is more common among men and among non-Hispanic White individuals. Risk factors for developing bladder cancer include a history of tobacco use, a family history of bladder cancer, a past history of radiation therapy to the pelvis, and prolonged exposure to certain chemicals such as arsenic[2]. There is no standard screening test for bladder cancer. The most common sign of bladder cancer is blood in the urine. Bladder cancer is often diagnosed at an early stage, when the cancer is easier to treat.[[br]] [[br]] ---- 1 [https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/uscs/technical_notes/data_sources/incidence.htm][[br]] 2 [https://www.cancer.gov/types/bladder/causes-risk-factors]
