Complete Health Indicator Report of Utah Population Characteristics: Age Distribution of the Population
Definition
The percentage of persons in each age group.Numerator
Number of persons in age group.Denominator
Total population size.Data Interpretation Issues
Because many diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, are less common among younger persons, the Utah population is healthier than the U.S. population. In order to remove the "age effect," health data are often age-adjusted for presentation in reports. Why Is This Important?
People's age, sex, culture, and living and working conditions affect their health in important ways that must be considered in planning for the public health of the population. Having a large percentage of the population made up of young children emphasizes the importance of making available key preventive health measures (e.g. immunizations) and age-appropriate screenings to identify developmental delays at a time when treatment is most effective. How Are We Doing?
Utahns, on a percentage basis, are on average younger than the rest of the U.S. population. According to 2022 the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 1-year estimate table DP05, Utah had the youngest state population in the U.S. with a median age of 32.1 years versus 39 years nationally. How Do We Compare With the U.S.?
According to 2022 the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 1-year estimate table DP05, 27.5% of the Utah estimated population were under age 18, compared with 21.7% of the total U.S. population.Available Services

Health Status Outcomes
Age is one of the most important risk factors for many diseases, including the leading causes of death in Utah, heart disease and cancer. The relative youth of the Utah population is one important factor in our relative good health. In order to remove the "age effect" and allow accurate comparisons, health data are commonly age adjusted for presentation in reports such as this one. Age is associated with health status for many of the Indicator Reports included here.Related Health Status Outcomes Indicators:

Data Notes
"Utah Small Areas" refers to a set of geographic areas in Utah with population sizes ranging from approximately 8,000 to 86,000 persons. These geographic areas are especially useful for doing public health assessment in communities within urban counties. To get more information on Utah Small Area definitions, please go to [https://ibis.utah.gov/ibisph-view/pdf/resource/UtahSmallAreaInfo.pdf]. *Small areas that are also counties use the county population estimate.Data Sources
