Public health is concerned with threats to health based on the analysis of health and related measures in populations. Knowing the numbers of people in a population is important to understand the need for public health and related services. These numbers are also needed for calculating rates of the many important measures of the public's health. Population estimates help in planning for future public health needs.How Are We Doing?
The U.S. population grew by 0.5% in 2023. The national population growth is historically low, but is a slight uptick from the 0.4% increase in 2022 and the 0.2% increase in 2021. Growth patterns varied widely across the country. Utah ranked 10th on numeric growth among all states between 2022 to 2023.
