Getting Started

The counts and analyses below are restricted to confirmed COVID-19 cases. UDOH considers any person with a positive SARS-CoV2 PCR or antigen test to be a confirmed case.

Utah's LHDs may also report their own case data. Local reports should be considered the most up to date and accurate information for their local area due to small differences in case classifications at any given time

Case data is displayed by the date the first positive laboratory result is reported to public health. There will be small differences in cases by date as public health receives additional information

Case and lab data are updated weekly on Thursdays using reported case data

Not all cases are able to be interviewed, and some data are not routinely collected for all cases such as hospitalizations, geographic area, and comorbidities. Because of this an "Unknown" represents either a case that was not able to be interviewed or a case that was interviewed but that particular data was not collected (due to high case counts or an individual deciding not to report that data).

The deaths reported in IBIS are limited to confirmed cases with no alternative cause of death noted on the death certificate or reported by the Office of the Medical Examiner. The counts reported in IBIS will be lower than the counts reported on the public dashboard, as the public dashboard includes probable cases in the death count as well. These counts are provisional and subject to change as investigations are completed. In this query, deaths are reported by the day UDOH was notified of their first positive test, not the date of death as reported on https://coronavirus.utah.gov/. Deaths often occur days to weeks after they are first diagnosed with COVID-19.

Race/ethnicity data: race categories are not mutually exclusive and will not sum to the total cases, as cases can identify as more than one race. "Other race" includes cases that identified as a race not listed. "Unknown race" captures cases for whom race data was not provided or collected.

Comorbidities
Data on pre-existing conditions are gathered from a variety of sources, including case interviews and medical records (when available). Case interviews are conducted by many public health investigators across state and local health departments to determine what potential medical risk factors cases may have had prior to developing COVID-19. Data gathered through interviews is self-reported by cases and is dependent on willingness to share this information with health departments. This is not a complete list of conditions and rates may change as public health collects more data and performs additional analysis.

Examples of persons with compromised immune systems include those with cancer and transplant patients who are taking certain immunosuppressive drugs, persons living with HIV/AIDS, and those with inherited diseases that affect the immune system. Chronic pulmonary conditions include uncontrolled asthma, emphysema, and COPD. Examples of persons with a disability include those with dementia, seizure disorders, cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease. Psychological/psychiatric conditions include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder

Step 9: How to display the data

To display a map, you must select Geographic Area in Display By (category) and None in Group By (series)

Display By (category) Primary group by field Defines the data's primary grouping dimension. The primary grouping is required and also controls the ordering of the result's data rows. In MS-Excel and other graphing packages this is typically referred to as the the "dataset's category". If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this value/dimension is associated with table's "row" values. Others will refer to this value as the first "cross by" or the first dimension.
Group By (series) Optional secondary group by field Defines the 2nd field (or dimension) to be used to group and aggregate values by. MS-Excel chart users will commonly refer to this as the dataset's "series" field. If viewing in a 2-d table layout then this field is associated with data table's value columns. Series group bys are optional. Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified.

NOTE: Maps and some charts, like the "Pie" chart, are currently not programmed to handle datasets that have more than one group by e.g. they only work with the primary category type group by being specified.
